‘10 times the washing charge will be compensated for loss or damage’

Thus reads the sign at the Tala branch of Black and White Laundry Bahrain

Two months ago Black and White Laundry returned a pair of expensive evening trousers pressed with a crease down the centre of the leg, even though I expressedly pointed out they should not have a crease and the assistant duly wrote down press in ‘outline’ - apparently the industry term, for no crease. The trousers were returned with a sharp crease down the centre of the leg. A period of several weeks passed when the same assistant assured me the trousers had been returned and repressed. They in fact remained in the shop with no action being taken. When the trousers were eventually repressed and returned to me, they were in poor repair. They had clearly been pressed at a very high temperature leaving the fabric shiny and marked with imprints of the trouser detailing.

When I contacted the proprietor to claim compensation, a sum of 4 dinars, I was astounded when he informed me that he could not refund me ‘even one dinar’ as the policy was not to offer compensation for faulty workmanship but to provide more of the same. Despite the fact that my trousers had been sent back to the laundry three times to no good effect they were now offering to wash them for free 10 times.

I would suggest that maintaining a positive image of the company and good customer relations would merit the sum of 4 dinars.
